Stephen Gaffney received his BFA from the School of Visual Arts, NY in 1987 

and his MFA from the New York Academy of Art, Graduate School of Figurative Art in 1990. 

His work has been in numerous group shows, including Kent Gallery, CT, Hall-Barnett Gallery, 

New Orleans and the Absolut and Take Home a Nude® Invitational Exhibitions 

in New York . He has had several one person exhibitions including Suffolk County College, NY 

and Galerie Timothy Tew, Atlanta, GA. From 1995-1997 he was a member and director of First 

Street Gallery in New York City. Recent projects have included two portrait commissions, 

paintings of Brooklyn, an interior design and mural for a Hudson condominiums playroom and 

two faerytale paintings.

Studio163 was opened in 1998. Public commissions and clients from 1999 to 2004 include Jean-Luc 

Restaurants; Hazlewood Foods, Nottinghampshire, UK and The New York City Dept. of Parks 

and Recreation. His work is in collections as diverse as Home Depot and Vanessa Williams. 

In 2004 he was a recepient of the Edwin Austin Abbey Fellowship in mural painting at 

the New York Academy of Design. 

Stephen is a full time faculty member at the School of Visual Arts. He teaches figure drawing and painting since 1991. 

He lives in Brooklyn, NY with his wife and two children.
